Most energy is not just arithmetic

AI efficiency is often discussed in terms of operations per second, but moving data can consume a large share of system energy. Efficient AI silicon therefore focuses on where data lives, how often it moves and whether the compute units can stay busy without repeatedly fetching the same values.

1. Keep data close to compute

Local SRAM, caches and carefully designed dataflows reduce trips to external memory. Reusing weights and activations on chip can lower energy and improve performance at the same time.

2. Use the precision the model actually needs

Many inference workloads can use lower-precision formats instead of full floating-point arithmetic. Smaller values reduce storage, memory traffic and the size or energy of arithmetic units. The correct format depends on model accuracy requirements.

3. Build around common neural operations

Dedicated matrix engines, tensor datapaths and hardware support for frequently used operations can avoid the overhead of executing the same work through more general instruction machinery.

4. Avoid idle silicon

An oversized chip can waste leakage power and area, while a poorly balanced system leaves compute waiting on memory. Workload-led architecture tries to size compute, bandwidth and interfaces together so the design spends more time doing useful work.

5. Reduce unnecessary physical iterations

Energy efficiency also begins before the product runs. Better simulation and pre-silicon validation can reduce avoidable design iterations and improve the chance that the first manufactured design is close to its intended operating point.

Low-power AI is a system property. Compute units, memory hierarchy, precision, software, packaging and workload scheduling all contribute to the final watts at the wall or battery.

What to measure

  • Energy or power per inference.
  • Performance per watt at representative utilisation.
  • External memory traffic per inference.
  • Latency at the required power limit.
  • Thermal behaviour during sustained workloads.
  • Accuracy impact of reduced precision.
